Why Those Who Practice Self Care Feel Happier

Why Those Who Practice Self Care Feel Happier

64% of people feel more confident, 67% feel more productive and 71% feel happier when they prioritise self care.. but why? When they say life is what you make it, I think it's how we respond to the unexpected things in life that are where the making of a life we love matters most.

Self-care practices can be defined as any type of activity we engage in, to take care of our physical, emotional, or mental health. These practices can range from taking a relaxing bath, to going for a walk in nature, to surfing, journalling, spending time with loved ones to something as small but significant as prioritising our skin care routine morning and night.

When you prioritise self-care, you are sending a message to yourself that you are important and worthy of care. This can lead to increased self-confidence and a more positive outlook on life in general. When you feel good about yourself, you are more likely to be productive and successful in both your personal and professional life.

We prioritise self-care at Slowly Golden, it’s a big part of what we believe and we want to share that message with you. We believe it’s about being wildly present in each moment so that we have less and do more with what we do own, use, and wear. It’s about finding time for ourselves to nurture and nourish, to remember what sustains us. Something that really excites us is introducing a brand like Biobod to our community and our store. This brand was created from a desire to rethink the way we approach caring for our skin. Developed to work with your body and not against it by restoring the natural mechanisms of skin health.

I personally (@stephaniemsaxton) use this range every day and find that prioritising my skincare routine and taking the time to wash, exfoliate, moisturise and love on my skin has brought about a deeper sense of self-care and nourishment both physically and emotionally, which ultimately contributes to a happier and more confident me.

Self-care practices can help us reduce stress and improve our overall mental health. When we feel stressed, our bodies release cortisol, a hormone that can negatively impact our physical and mental health, so engaging in self-care practices can help us lower our cortisol levels, which can lead to a greater sense of calm and well-being.

Overall, practicing self-care can contribute to a greater sense of happiness and well-being. By taking the time to care for ourselves, we can improve our physical, emotional, and mental health, leading to a happier and more fulfilling life overall.

If you're wondering how to get started with self-care, here are a few ideas that we personally love:

  • Set aside a little bit of extra time each morning and night and be conscious of your skin care routine, notice how it feels washing your face, the sensation, the smells, how you feel while applying your moisturiser.. think of your skincare routine like a little self love ritual. We love to recommend and use our collection of Biobod which you can find here. But ultimately we want everyone to go for something good for your skin, so be conscious of the ingredients.
  • Morning coffee or matcha anyone? I personally love a little morning routine, sipping my coffee and and writing in my Dear Future journal. This journal really helps me to reflect, create and focus on the good things in my life, like my friends, family, projects and dreams (always) that are the foundations of what happen next. A little morning gratitude in our Dear Future journal will go a long way in creating room for more of the good things in life.
  • Rent a surf board and spend an hour in the ocean (not only is this healing but it’s so nice to challenge yourself mentally too)
  • Make that DIY face mask you saved on TikTok
  • Date yourself to a new café in the area
  • Go for a cold plunge in the ocean or river (trust me it makes you feel SO alive!)
  • Watch a movie from your childhood (que: Toy Story, The Lion King and Home Alone - comment below your favourite childhood movie!)
  • Go on a headphone-free walk and ground yourself in nature
  • Organise your home, closet or dresser drawers (this always makes me feel good)
  • Light that candle and put on your favourite calming music
  • Read 50 pages of a book
  • Walk through your local town
  • Pull up YouTube and try a 20-30 minute deep stretch or yoga class

So from our cozy corner, scented with divine Becca Project Candles and cozy in Slowly Golden, Pinky & Kamal and Zulu and Zephyr, to yours - have a wonderful week, whatever you make of it.
